Is LyondellBasell Industries Underperforming the S&P 500?

Houston, Texas-based LyondellBasell Industries N.V. (LYB) is one of the leading plastics, chemical, and refining companies globally. Its products are used in electronics, automotive parts, packaging, construction materials, and biofuels. With a market cap of $17.5 billion, LyondellBasell’s operations span North America, Europe, Indo-Pacific, and internationally.
Companies worth $10 billion or more are generally described as "large-cap stocks." LYB fits right into that category, with its market cap exceeding this threshold, reflecting its substantial size, influence, and dominance in the specialty chemicals industry.
Despite its notable strengths, LYB stock has plunged 43.2% from its 52-week high of $97.60 touched on Sept. 27, 2024. Meanwhile, LYB has declined 9.2% over the past three months, notably underperforming the S&P 500 Index’s ($SPX) 9.4% gains during the same time frame.

Over the longer term, LYB stock has tanked 25.3% on a YTD basis and 41% over the past 52 weeks, notably underperforming SPX’s 12% gains in 2025 and 18.6% surge over the past year.
To confirm the bearish trend, LYB stock has remained consistently below its 200-day moving average over the past year and mostly below its 50-day moving average with some fluctuations.

LyondellBasell Industries’ stock prices declined 7.8% in a single trading session following the release of its lackluster Q2 results on Aug. 1. The company’s topline for the quarter plummeted 11.8% year-over-year to $7.7 billion, but managed to beat the Street expectations by a notable margin. However, its margins observed an even worse contraction, leading to a 71.8% fall in adjusted EPS to $0.62, missing the consensus estimates by 28.7%.
Meanwhile, LyondellBasell has also underperformed its peer, DuPont de Nemours, Inc.’s (DD) 2.3% uptick in 2025 and 2.4% dip over the past 52 weeks.
Among the 19 analysts covering the LYB stock, the consensus rating is a “Hold.” Its mean price target of $61.37 suggests a 10.6% upside potential from current price levels.
